Czech medical universities have many medical students from all over the world. Every year there are students from Charles University, Palacky University or Masaryk University who decide to leave them for various reasons and continue their studies somewhere else. There is an option to resume studies without the need to pass the same exams again – by transferring medical studies to Slovakia. Transfers of both programs (General medicine or Dental medicine) are possible.
How do the transfers of medical studies to Slovakia works?
First of all, you need to do paperwork – as the deadline for transfer is up to 31.8., we suggest to use the help of our agency. Otherwise, you may risk missing deadlines and losing one year waiting for the next intake (there is only September intake in Slovakia, February intake is not possible). We suggest University of Pavel Jozef Safarik for transfer as you might be transferred to 5th year after passing an entrance test. You can check transfer rules to different universities in Europe to compare your chances (transfers to central Europe)
What are the most important points to check?
- how many subjects do you have pending?
- did you complete subjects more than 5 years ago?
- where is your medical university located?
Let us go through all 3 points.
How many subjects do you have pending?
No one wishes to spend more time at University than needed. The standard length of study programs of General medicine and Dental medicine in Slovakia is 6 years (total number of 360 credits) – even if in your home university Dental medicine may take 5 years.
First of all, you will need to compare your completed subjects with subjects at Pavel Jozef Safarik University. For example, there are following subjects in the first year: Anatomy 1, Anatomy 2, Biology 1, Biology 2, Histology and embryology 1, Medical chemistry, Medical informatics, Medical terminology, Physical education, and Medical Ethics. If you had the same or similar subjects in your home university and you completed them, you are safe and you may transfer directly to the second year at UPJS. You need to take a look also on type of completion of your exams in Czech Republic – if for example Anatomy 1 was completed at credit test, but in UPJS it is completed as exam, you cannot ask for recognition of the subject. All the decisions about transfers are made by the management of UPJS – Faculty of medicine. The deadline for submitting documents is the end of August.
Did you complete your subjects within the last 5 years?
If there are subjects that you completed more than 5 years back, it is not possible to recognize them. There are cases when a student is exceeding standard length of studies and studying already for 5-6 years. In this case, it would be problematic to recognise courses that he completed in 1st or second year. The student will need to enroll for the oldest subjects (means completed more than 5 years ago) and only after their successful passing them, it is possible to pass subjects from higher years.
Where is your home medical university located?
Usually, there are no transfers with transfer from the Czech Republic. Charles University, Palacky University or Masaryk University are recognized in Europe and worldwide. All are running under ECTS system, therefore, completion of subjects in the Czech Republic is equivalent to completing them in Slovakia. The problem may arise if you have done part of your medical studies somewhere outside of the European Union (I had cases when part of education was done in Germany and part in Ukraine). The curriculum at Ukrainian medical universities is usually very specific – for example, there could be subjects unrelated to medicine or dentistry that cannot be recognized). If this is your case, we suggest contacting us and we will be happy to help you. You can send an email to medhead@meadhead.eu or call us +420778891055
If you got positive answers for all mentioned questions, you are on good track which means that you may get enrolled to study the year you wish.
