About the University of Tartu
University of Tartu or UT comes between the elite study and research centers for the medical students. It is also Estonia’s most reputed university. There are four campuses of the University: Main Campus, Pärnu, Narva and Viljandi. Presently there are more than 14,000 students who are enrolled in all the campuses with a record of 1660 international students who are enrolled in different courses and researches which are hosted by the University of Tartu.
Brief history of the University
The university was established in the year 1632 by Baron Johan Skytte and during its early days, the University of Tartu was named Academia Gustaviana. The revival of the university happened in April 1802 when it was entitled Kaiserliche Universität zu Dorpat (also Imperatorski Derptskij Universitet). Its original name was given on 1st of December 1919, when Tartu University was opened with the Estonian language of instructions. There was strong collaboration with Finnish and German teachers from the beginning of the existence of this university. The most famous medical doctors and teachers related to the University were Ludvig Puusepp, Aleksander Paldrok, Artur Valdes and Heinrich Koppel.
International rankings of the University
With the intimation of Estonian culture and its high research opportunities the university is considered among the top 1 percent of the universities in the world. As per the QS ranking, the world university ranking of the University of Tartu is among the best 300 universities worldwide. As per the Estonian science record the university is holding a record of all 22 research fields. The University of Tartu is also holding a record of getting into the top 1 percent of most-cited universities for almost more than 11 research courses which are done by the university.
University also focuses on developing international reputation and business which helps the management as well as students of the university to get the high quality of research facilities. Working closely with the companies and solving real-life industrial issues has provided a key development for the UTians. The University of Tartu is the strongest research university in Estonia. The university’s hall of fame includes physicists Moritz Hermann Jacobi and Emil Lenz, chemists Carl Claus and Wilhelm Ostwald, physiologist Carl Schmidt, pharmacist Johan Georg Dragendorff, anatomist August Rauber, naturalist Karl Ernst von Baer, founder of cultural semiotics Juri Lotman, and many more. High-level research is conducted as well by the university’s Centres of Excellence. UT is an innovative R&D partner for small enterprises and multinational corporations. Satellite EstCube-1 made Estonia the 41st space nation in the world.
General Medicine at University of Tartu
The entire degree is taught in English and the total length of the program is for 6 years with total load of 360 ECTS. There are only 24 places offered in English language, with fees of 12,000€ per one year. The university is popular among Finnish students, who have their international organization TASLO for Finnish students.
The major objective of the course is to develop a better professional in the medical field. The general objective of the Medicine program is to train physicians who are able to provide medical assistance of high-quality corresponding to recent achievements in medicine and high ethical standards; enhance the awareness of society of the importance of measures of health promotion and disease prevention; wish to contribute by their activities to the development of medicine as a field as well as medical science;are willing to engage in self-education during their entire professional career. After graduation students can pursue a wide variety of careers internationally. Students have an opportunity to continue their education in a residency program in Estonia or abroad and become doctor-specialists; study medicine at doctoral level, or have a job requiring a medical degree.
Admission to study program General medicine in Tartu
The application deadline is mid of April, results of the admission process will be published around 25th of May.Academic year is starting on 29th of August. Students need to have their secondary school completed (please check specific requirements as per country here: https://ut.ee/en/content/country-specific-requirements) and pass BMAT exam. Applications are then processed in the following way: 70% of the final mark is BMAT result, 15% of the evaluation is motivational letter, 15% is entrance interview. In order to be considered for admission, BMAT and motivational letter must be at least 51 points out of 100. Motivational interview is mostly about fluency in English language (30%) and analytical / argumentation skills (70%). Application is submitted online

About the city
Tartu is the second biggest city of Estonia, after Estonia’s capital Tallinn. It is situated 186 kilometers southeast of Tallinn and 245 kilometers northeast of Riga, the capital of Latvia. The distance to Estonia’s summer holiday capital Pärnu in the west is 176 kilometers and the fastest route there by car is through Viljandi and Kilingi-Nõmme. Tartu lies on the Emajõgi (“Mother river”), which connects the two largest lakes of Estonia, Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipus. The city is served by Tartu Airport. The city is a very beautiful place with low use of diesel or petrol engines. The country has already started using eco-friendly vehicles and for the last few years the rate of using series has amplified.
The city government has also developed some rented cycles for the people at cheaper and affordable rates. Since everything is well connected and nearby it becomes very easy to use cycles for example for transport means. Tartu is often measured as the academic center of the country, particularly since it is home to the nation’s first born and most well-known university, the University of Tartu; Tartu itself is also the first-born city of Estonia and other Baltic nations.
