The University of Split offers a program of General medicine in the English language. 70 seats are distributed among students from Germany (40 seats) who study for 3 years in Croatia and 3 years in Germany (Regiomed Kliniken) and other international students (30 seats) who study for 6 years in Split. Students have 5500 hours of education during their studies. As Croatia is a member of the European Union, the University follows the ECTS credit system and the degree is internationally recognized in the whole European Union.
About the School of Medicine in Split
The school of medicine has existed since 26.03.1997 and offers a study program in General medicine in the English language. The School of medicine of the University of Split has a first-class infrastructure for teaching and research and an excellent living environment for students at the heart of the Mediterranean. It has a basic medical science building with 10 laboratories and 40 teaching departments, a building for teaching and administration with offices, seminar halls, an amphitheater, a future School’s outpatient center, and a Pathology and Anatomy Complex. The school is also performing research projects at a high level, for example, they established The Croatian Centre for Global Health (CCGH) and Center for Evidence-based Medicine (established in 2018). Students come from various countries, such as Germany, the United Kingdom, the USA, and Norway. The majority of international students studying in the program General Medicine come from Germany, Norway, Sweden, Canada, or the US. The school has close cooperation with REGIOMED-Kliniken in Germany, the Medical College of Wisconsin and Penn State University in the USA.
About the study program of General medicine
The program has a length of 6 years with 366 ECTS. The tuition fees are 12.000€ per year of studies. Students have 5.500 hours of education during their studies. The academic year starts in 1st week of October. Education is not divided into semesters and classes are held in blocks for each subject. The English program has run since 2011/2012. The education is conducted in small groups of students from 21 countries. There are 70 seats offered for international students, 40 of which is assigned to students from Germany studying for 3 years in Split and 3 years at clinics in Germany (RegioMed clinics). The remaining 30 seats are offered to international students from all over the world. The program started in 2011, with a capacity of 60 students (currently the limit is 70).
The first examination period begins a few days (counting weekends and holidays) after the end of each course. The second examination period is held between 16th and 31st of July, and the third and the fourth are held in September. The application process for the program of General medicine
The Faculty does not have a standard entrance exam procedure and students are admitted based on the submission of documents and oral interviews with the faculty. Nostrification is required only after admission to the faculty. Students need to submit the following documents: application form, ID/passport, academic documents, CV with photo, an application fee of 100€, proof of knowledge of the English language (Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)), unless prior education was in English language or English is the mother tongue).
Applicants can also submit additional documents to support their application: Results of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) exam, previous university studies transcript of records, SAT reasoning score or recommendation letters.
Students who will get acceptance letters should start with other formalities, especially recognition of foreign qualifications from the Education and Teacher Training Agency (nostrification). Sworn translation of academic documents is required. Students will obtain the official status of enrolled students after the payment of tuition fees. Tuition fees are non-refundable.
Transfers to the School of Medicine in Split
Two major conditions for the transfer are the compatibility of the programs (transfers are possible only from human medicine programs) and the right to enroll into higher year at the current university. The number of available slots is very limited and it is based on the number of students who failed to enroll into a higher year of education at the UUSM. Information about the number of free slots is available in September, after all exam terms. The faculty has good experience with transfer from universities in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. The transfer year depends on the submitted documents.
